Those with event planning experience who want to strike out on their own can make brilliant, successful wedding planners. But really, if you have the determination, ability to listen to what the client wants and coordination skills to make it happen with every detail in place, becoming a wedding planner might be the perfect escape plan from a dreary job or a spell of unemployment. As Navarro explains, you decide how many weddings you do in a year and who you will work with. It’s a sociable career that demands good networking abilities so you can develop a pool of wedding photographers, caterers, DJs and bands, florists and all of the other independent professionals who spin their magic on the couple’s dream day.

Navarro starts out by warning potential planners that it is not all cake sampling and glamor. First and foremost, it the couple’s day – not the planner’s! And few people have their wedding between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm during the week. If working evenings and weekends suits your lifestyle and you genuinely want to help other people see their dream weddings come true, you might just love being a wedding planner whether you do it for a few years or the rest of your working life.
